Flamers Flamer (n.) - A term used widely on the Internet used to describe one who insults another and/or makes rude comments about them. A person who indulges in the act of "Flaming". That's the best definition for the word flamer I could come up with. Still, there's no denying the fact that flamers are hated far and wide. But this definition should clear up a few problems I have with this term. First and foremost, bad reviews are NOT flamers. The little review box down at the bottom of your fics (On FFDN, at least) is for good and bad reviews. Now let me give you an example. For a fic I had up that was a Dragonball Z/ X-Men crossover. It was getting a bit confusing and I had resolved to remove it and retool it a bit. Before I did, however, I recieved a review from a person who said, and I quote, "It was good idea, but you delivered it wrong." And I wholeheartedly agree. I screwed up with that fic and therefore I've removed it. That is a bad review. Now we turn to my story "The Idiot's Guide to the Dragonball Saga". There I recieved a review that said, and I quote again, "Dude, you're gay." Now this is a blatant insult, has absolutely NOTHING to o with the fic, and is, by the above definition, considered a flame. Usually flames will come from anonymous reviewers because these people are too scared to let you know their identity but have the gall to toss an insult your way. Now I'm not mad at this guy. Why, you ask? Well, at the beginning of my fic, I ask for flames. And no, I don't like flames. Think about it. Not only are flames made by incredibly stupid people (Which you can make fun of forever since they've left their mark on a website that will hopefully never be taken down), but the things they say are so downright mean and retarded, it's funny! On that Dragonball Z/ X-Men fic, I recieved a review that said "That sucked cock." Needless to say, I cracked up. C'mon! When all the reviews you get are good, you don't even see one like that coming! Another thing is that these flames go along with the old adage "Without evil, there can be no good", and vice-versa. If there were no flames, how would we tell what was a good review? And if there were no good reviews, then wouldn't flames be good? It's very confusing, yes, but it makes sense in a Colt Fusion/ Chaos Theory kind of way (Yes I aced science). So what was the main point of this article? No, it's not an anti-flame article. No, it's not a pro-flame article. The purpose of this is to show you the pros and cons of these and how to truly identify a flamer. But the guy said, "Dude, you're gay." That was funny.
